Lessons Offered

Whatever stage you're at, John covers it.

From a first lesson in an automatic to motorway confidence after you've passed — all taught on the roads you'll actually be tested on.

Automatic driving lessons

No clutch, no stalling, no hill-start panic on the Borders' steep streets. Many learners get test-ready faster in an automatic because every bit of attention goes on the road instead of the gearbox.

Manual driving lessons

Prefer a full licence that covers every car? John teaches manual too — clutch control, gear selection and hill starts built up patiently until they're second nature.

Refresher lessons

Passed years ago and lost your nerve? Back behind the wheel after a break, an illness or a move to the UK? Refresher sessions rebuild confidence at whatever pace suits you, with no judgement.

Motorway & Pass Plus

The test doesn't cover everything. Post-test tuition on motorways, dual carriageways, night driving and bad weather — the situations that actually worry new drivers on the A7 and A68.

Automatic or Manual?

Not sure which to learn in?

The hills, roundabouts and junctions around Galashiels and Earlston can be demanding. Here's what going automatic actually removes.

No Stalling

Forget clutch control on steep Borders hills. An automatic does it for you — every time, without stress or embarrassment.

Fewer Lessons Needed

Many learners pass faster in an automatic because they can focus on hazard awareness and road sense — not gear changes.

Focus on the Road

With your hands free of the gearstick, your eyes stay on the road and your mind stays calm — exactly what examiners want to see.

An automatic licence lets you drive any automatic car on UK roads — and most new and company cars are automatic anyway. A manual licence covers both. If you're undecided, ring John and talk it through; he'll give you a straight answer for your situation.

Driving lessons across the Scottish Borders.

📍 Galashiels 📍 Earlston 📍 Lauder 📍 Gordon 📍 Newtown St Boswells 📍 St Boswells 📍 Newstead 📍 Melrose

Driving lessons in Galashiels

Gala is where most pupils sit their test, at the driving test centre on Croft Street. John teaches on the roads the examiners use — the A7 through town, the tighter residential streets off it, and the rural stretches out towards Melrose and Selkirk — so nothing on test day is a surprise.

Driving lessons in Earlston & the villages

Home ground. Lessons start from your door in Earlston, Gordon, Lauder or the smaller villages, and build from quiet back roads up to the A68 and the busier junctions around Newtown St Boswells.

Not on the list? John may still be able to cover your area. Give him a call and he'll let you know — he knows every road from Melrose to the Moorfoot Hills.

Common Questions

Questions learners ask before their first lesson.

Do you teach automatic and manual?

Both. Most pupils choose automatic because it removes clutch control and stalling altogether, but John teaches manual for anyone who wants a licence covering every car. If you start in one and want to switch, that's fine too.

Do you cover Galashiels?

Yes — Galashiels is one of the main areas John teaches in, along with Earlston, Lauder, Gordon, Melrose, Newtown St Boswells, St Boswells and Newstead. He'll pick you up from home, work or college.

Where will I sit my driving test?

Most Borders learners test at the Galashiels driving test centre on Croft Street. Lessons are taught on the roads around it, so the routes are familiar well before test day.

Do you do refresher lessons for drivers who already have a licence?

Yes. Refresher lessons suit anyone who has been off the road for a while, lost confidence after a knock, moved to the UK on a foreign licence, or simply wants a brush-up before a long drive.

Can I learn motorway driving after I've passed?

Yes — post-test and Pass Plus style tuition covers motorways, dual carriageways, night driving and poor weather. It's the tuition most new drivers wish they'd had before their first winter on the A7.

How many lessons will I need?

It depends entirely on how often you practise and how much driving you've done before. John will give you an honest view after the first couple of lessons rather than selling you a block up front.

How much do lessons cost?

Automatic lessons are £42 an hour, or £205 for a block of 5 hours and £410 for 10. Manual lessons are £40 an hour, or £195 for 5 hours and £390 for 10. Refresher, motorway and Pass Plus tuition is charged at the same hourly rate. Call or text John on 07980 916337 to confirm before booking.
